This piece belongs to Mexico's long-running "Lugares y Tradiciones" (Places and Traditions) circulating bimetallic series, which the Casa de Moneda launched in 2004 to rotate regional cultural subjects through the 20-peso denomination. Colima — Mexico's smallest state by area — was founded as a Spanish settlement in 1523 by Gonzalo de Sandoval, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited European-established towns in mainland North America. The "First Villa" designation refers specifically to that founding status, recognized in colonial administrative records before Mexico City itself was fully consolidated.
