The design is encircled by a wreath of oak and laurel branches tied at the base with a ribbon. The aluminium-bronze outer ring bears the national legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS arching across the upper field in raised capital letters. |

| Descrizione del rovescio | The nickel-brass centre presents a composite commemorative design depicting, to the left, a detailed rendering of a 16th-century Spanish galleon under full sail riding stylised waves, and to the right, the façade of the historic Cathedral of Veracruz with its characteristic bell tower and arched colonnade. The mint mark Mo appears in the upper centre of the inner field, flanked by the inscription 500 VERACRUZ above. The denomination $20 is prominently displayed in large numerals at the base of the centre, with the commemorative date span 1519-2019 inscribed in the lower left of the ring. The aluminium-bronze outer ring carries the full commemorative legend 500 AÑOS DE LA FUNDACIÓN DE LA CIUDAD Y PUERTO DE VERACRUZ arching around the upper and right periphery. |
