Obverse description The obverse carries the issuing bank title "EL BANCO DE COSTA RICA" across the upper portion, with the date "SAN JOSE, 1º de Abril de 1899" and the promise to pay the bearer twenty pesos in coined currency. The denomination numeral 20 appears in all four corners within decorative frames, and an ornate guilloche underprint fills the field. The printer's imprint of the American Bank Note Company, New York, appears in fine letterpress at the lower margin.
