This coin was struck to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus's 1492 landing — a date El Salvador, like several Latin American republics, used as an occasion to issue prestige gold coinage aimed as much at international financial credibility as domestic circulation. Very few were minted, and the issue was never intended for everyday commerce.
