Banco San Fernando was one of several Chilean private banks authorized to issue notes under the 1860 Ley de Bancos, and this 20 Pesos belongs to the final decade of that free-banking arrangement. The Chilean government moved to end private note issue entirely in 1898, consolidating currency authority under the Banco de la República — which means any note dated toward the end of this series' range was circulating right at the close of an era when a dozen competing bank notes were still in simultaneous use across the country.
ABNC printed the bulk of Chilean private bank paper during this period, often sharing plate elements across multiple client banks.
