Obverse description The national coat of arms of Ghana occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield: the upper left quarter bears a crossed linguist staff and ceremonial sword, the upper right quarter features a heraldic castle rising from a heraldic sea, and the two lower quarters display a cocoa tree and a mine shaft respectively, with a lion passant at the center of the cross. A five-pointed star is placed above the shield. The shield is supported on either side by two eagles, each bearing a star at the neck, and a scroll below carries the national motto FREEDOM AND JUSTICE. The country name GHANA appears in legend above the arms, with the date of issue inscribed at the bottom of the field.
