Alfonso XIII was just one year old when this coin was struck — his father, Alfonso XII, had died in November 1885, leaving Spain governed under the regency of Queen María Cristina. The "1st portrait" designation refers to the infant king's effigy as adapted for coinage during this regency period, an unusual circumstance in European numismatics where a reigning monarch's portrait appears on coins issued before he could speak.
The 1889 and 1890 dates are considerably scarcer than 1887 within this type. Cal#3 distinguishes this emission from the subsequent portrait issues that followed as the king aged into adolescence.
