Hungary's post-Trianon monetary reconstruction centered on the pengő, introduced in 1927 to replace the catastrophically inflated korona at a ratio of 12,500 to one. This pattern was struck two years into that stabilization effort, almost certainly as part of the Royal Mint's internal trials for a proposed gold coinage that never reached circulation — the economic pressures of the late 1920s, followed by the Depression, killed any practical gold issue before it could be authorized.
The Adamo PE8.3 designation suggests multiple die or edge variants were explored within this type. Surviving examples are overwhelmingly in institutional or specialist collections.
