Beschrijving keerzijde A contemporary allegorical depiction of Britannia, designed by Dan Thorne, shown as a helmeted female figure in classical drapery, facing slightly upward and to the left. She holds a trident in her left hand and bears a shield adorned with a roaring lion's head at her right side, with stylised radiating sunrays and cresting waves filling the background field. A beaded inner border frames the central design, with the legend BRITANNIA arching above and FINE SILVER to the right, flanked by the weight and fineness inscription 1/10 OZ 999 to the left. The date 2022 appears in the exergue, and the engraver's initials DT are visible at the lower centre of the inner field.

Aanvullende informatie

This piece belongs to the Britannia bullion series, which the Royal Mint has issued continuously since 1987. The 20 pence denomination is nominal — a legal fiction, essentially, given the silver content's actual value — and exists primarily to satisfy the technical requirement that all Britannia coins carry a face value under British law. The fifth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark, was introduced in 2015 and appeared on circulating and bullion coinage alike until her death in September 2022, making issues from that final year transitional in a precise institutional sense.
