| 裏面の説明 | Central device comprising a crowned Tudor rose, symbolising the union of the Houses of York and Lancaster, depicted in high relief with petals, sepals, and stamens finely detailed. The date flanks the crown to left and right, with the engravers' initials W and G appearing discreetly on either side of the rose stem. The inscription TWENTY PENCE arcs along the upper periphery, while the large numeral 20 is prominently displayed in the lower field below the floral device. The overall composition was designed by William Gardner. |

The undated 20p error of 2008 gets all the attention, but this earlier portrait type carries its own quiet significance: it represents the last years before Peter Nathan's effigy of Elizabeth II was replaced by Raphael Maklouf's third portrait in 1985, a change driven partly by the Queen's own dissatisfaction with how the second portrait had aged on the coinage. The three-year window for this type is short by any measure.
