| Obverse description | Laureate and draped bust of King Charles I facing left, enclosed within a plain inner circle. The Roman numeral XX denoting the denomination appears in the right field beside the royal effigy. The surrounding Latin legend reads CAR. D. G. MAG. BR. FR. ET. HIB. R., abbreviated for Carolus Dei Gratia Magnae Britanniae Franciae et Hiberniae Rex, distributed around the periphery. The portrait is rendered in the characteristic Scottish milled coinage style of the period, with flowing hair beneath the laurel wreath and a mantle draped over the shoulder. |
