Macao's lunar series coins are issued jointly under the Monetary Authority but distributed largely through the casino and collectibles trade that dominates the territory's economy — making their effective circulation essentially nil from the moment of release. The 2013 Snake issue falls in the sixth cycle of the Chinese zodiac series, a program Macao has maintained continuously since the 1970s.
