Macao's lunar series has been issued continuously since the 1980s, but the 2020 Rat year carries particular weight in the collector market — the coin entered circulation just as COVID-19 was shutting down the Pearl River Delta, collapsing the casino economy that funds the Monetary Authority's reserve operations. Dealers on both sides of the border reported distribution disruptions within weeks of the issue date.
