Macau's lunar series coins are issued under the Monetary Authority rather than struck by a local facility — production is contracted to external mints, and the 2016 monkey issue is no exception. The Chinese zodiac cycle had particular commercial weight this year: the Year of the Monkey carries strong associative currency in southern Chinese folk tradition, and Macau's gaming and tourism economy amplifies collector demand for regionally resonant issues far beyond what comparable European territories would see.
