Macau reverted to Chinese sovereignty on December 20, 1999, ending 442 years of Portuguese administration — the longest European colonial presence in Asia. The tenth anniversary issue in 2009 was struck under the Autoridade Monetária de Macau, which itself had only assumed full central banking functions following handover, replacing the earlier Instituto Emissor de Macau. Unlike the parallel anniversary coinage from Hong Kong's 1997 handover, Macau's commemorative program remained comparatively modest in both mintage and international collector attention, keeping secondary market premiums tight for most dates in the series.
