The Banco Nacional Ultramarino, though long stripped of its note-issuing role in Portugal and its former African territories, retained a narrow mandate to issue currency for Macau. By 2020, that role was shared with the Banco da China — both banks issue legal tender patacas simultaneously, an arrangement unique among currency systems and a direct product of Macau's "one country, two systems" status under Chinese sovereignty. De La Rue's involvement is consistent with BNU's long printing history with the firm, which stretches back generations in the colonial series.
