The field displays the denomination '٢٠' (20) in large Arabic-Ottoman numerals at center, enclosed within a dotted circular border. The accession date 'سنة ١٣٢٧' (year AH 1327) and the regnal year appear in the legend, with floral ornaments filling the remaining field. The toothed border of the host coin encircles the entire design. No additional Hejazi countermark is applied to this side. |

The Hejaz coinage of 1916 was issued by Sharif Husayn ibn Ali immediately following his launch of the Arab Revolt against Ottoman rule in June of that year — these coins were among the first acts of a nascent state asserting administrative independence. Britain, backing the revolt through the Arab Bureau in Cairo, had every interest in seeing a functioning Hejazi monetary identity established quickly.
Nickel was an unusual choice for a region with no domestic minting infrastructure; production almost certainly relied on foreign technical assistance.
