| Obverse description | Ottoman tughra of Sultan Abdülaziz displayed prominently in the central field, rendered in elaborate calligraphic style. Surrounding Arabic legends fill the field, with floral and foliate decorative elements characteristic of mid-19th century Ottoman coinage. The design follows the standard format of the Turkish KM-687 host coin, struck at Constantinople in AH1277 year 1. |

Following the Greco-Turkish War and ongoing territorial turbulence in the Aegean, Greek authorities countermarked captured or circulating Ottoman copper to extend its use within Greek-controlled territory. The "A" countermark on this host coin — a Turkish 20 Para of the Abdul Aziz series — served as official authorization for continued legal tender circulation rather than a restriking exercise. Ottoman copper flooded Greek markets repeatedly throughout the nineteenth century simply because domestic mint output couldn't meet demand.
