The Khedivate of Egypt occupied a peculiar constitutional position in the 1870s — nominally Ottoman, practically autonomous, and financially collapsing. Ismail Pasha's ruinous borrowing forced the imposition of Anglo-French Dual Control over Egyptian finances in 1876, the same year this issue began. Coins struck under Abdul Hamid II's tughra were thus circulating through a treasury already effectively administered by European creditors.
Ismail was deposed by Ottoman firman in 1879, ending the issue's production run.
