| Obverse description | Central field dominated by the elaborate Ottoman tughra of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, rendered in high relief with characteristic sweeping calligraphic loops and vertical shafts. A stylized floral spray appears to the upper right of the tughra. The denomination numeral '٢٠' (20) is inscribed below the tughra in the lower field. The coin's border is formed by a continuous ring of beading. |

The Khedivate of Egypt occupied a peculiar constitutional position in the 1870s — nominally Ottoman, practically autonomous, and financially collapsing. Ismail Pasha's ruinous borrowing forced the imposition of Anglo-French Dual Control over Egyptian finances in 1876, the same year this issue began. Coins struck under Abdul Hamid II's tughra were thus circulating through a treasury already effectively administered by European creditors.
Ismail was deposed by Ottoman firman in 1879, ending the issue's production run.
