Montenegro's brief experiment with nickel coinage came just as the kingdom was absorbing territorial gains from the First Balkan War. The 1913–1914 dates on this type bracket the Second Balkan War and the eve of the First World War — after which Montenegro would never again issue coins as an independent state, having been occupied by Austria-Hungary in 1916 and ultimately absorbed into Yugoslavia in 1922.
KM#19 represents one of the last coin types ever struck for Montenegro. The series was produced at the Vienna mint.
