Additional information

Tribhuvana Bir Bikram was nominally king from 1911, but real power during this period was held entirely by the Rana prime ministers — a hereditary oligarchy that had controlled Nepal since 1846. Coins struck under his name in the early 1930s were issued under the authority of Prime Minister Juddha Shumsher Rana, not the king himself. Tribhuvana would not exercise genuine royal power until 1951, when he broke from Rana control by taking asylum in the Indian embassy in Kathmandu.
