The Bank of China has been one of Macau's three note-issuing banks since 1995, when it was granted that right alongside the long-established Banco Nacional Ultramarino — an arrangement that reflected Beijing's growing administrative influence in the territory ahead of the 1999 handover. This 2003 issue is part of the first full series Bank of China produced for Macau after that transition.
The "lotus numeral" designation distinguishes this from other 20 Patacas variants in the series by the stylized numeral treatment — a cataloguing distinction, not a printer's term. Printed date of 30 April 1945 in the metadata is clearly a data error and should not be taken as accurate.
