Justin II's joint coinage with Aelia Sophia was itself a political statement — the empress appears as co-ruler on the obverse, a deliberate echo of the Justinianic dynasty's legitimizing strategy. The Thessalonica mint served the western Balkans, a region under sustained Avar and Slavic pressure throughout this decade; coins from this facility circulated in a frontier zone increasingly difficult to hold.
The cross-form reverse on Thessalonica's 20 nummi output distinguishes it from the Constantinople issues of the same reign.
