Obverse description Facing busts of Emperor Justin II and Empress Aelia Sophia seated side by side on a double throne, both nimbate. Justin II appears at left, holding a cross-on-globe in his right hand; Sophia appears at right, holding a sceptre. The imperial couple are depicted in full frontal hieratic style, characteristic of Justinianic-era Byzantine coinage, with elaborate imperial regalia and crossed nimbi framing the composition. The legend is arranged around the periphery in Latin capitals.
