| Obverse description | Facing busts of Emperor Justin II and Empress Aelia Sophia, both nimbate, enthroned side by side on a double throne. Justin II is depicted on the left holding a globus cruciger in his right hand, while Sophia appears on the right holding a sceptre surmounted by a cross. The imperial couple is rendered in the formal hieratic style characteristic of mid-Byzantine coinage, with stylized drapery and rigid frontal presentation. The encircling Latin legend identifies the emperor in the customary devotional formula. |
