The imperial effigy is rendered in the late antique style typical of early Byzantine coinage, with visible paludamentum at the shoulder. A circular Latin legend surrounds the bust in the field. Anastasius I's currency reform of 498 AD was one of the most consequential monetary interventions in Byzantine history — reintroducing large, clearly marked bronze denominations after decades of tiny, nearly valueless minimi had dominated small transactions. The 20 nummi was part of that reformed system, struck at Antioch, one of the eastern empire's principal mints and a city whose commercial volume made workable small change a genuine administrative priority.
The Antioch mint's output under Anastasius is distinguished by workshop letters that allow individual officinae to be identified — the "NX" designation placing this piece within a specific production sequence that numismatists have mapped against the DOC corpus.
