Anastasius I's copper coinage reform of 498 AD was one of the most consequential monetary decisions in Byzantine history — the introduction of clearly marked denominations in large module struck bronze ended nearly a century of chaotic small anonymous nummi that circulated by weight rather than face value. The 20 nummi piece, the half-follis, was a direct product of that decree. Antioch, as the eastern capital's primary commercial hub, was among the first mints activated under the new system.
The AN/TX mint signature places this firmly at Antioch, the Greek letters serving as the city's identifier under the reformed workshop notation Anastasius standardized across all active mints.
