Issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1942 Protocol of Rio de Janeiro, which ended the brief but bloody Ecuador-Peru War of 1941. Peru's decisive military advantage in that conflict secured territorial gains that Ecuador refused to formally accept for decades — Quito officially repudiated the protocol in 1960, and the border dispute simmered into armed skirmishes as late as the Cenepa War of 1995, three years after this coin was struck.
