Issued to mark the 64th anniversary of Israeli independence, this coin belongs to a long-running Bank of Israel commemorative gold program that has produced annual issues since the 1990s. The menorah chosen as its subject is the one depicted on the Israeli state emblem — derived specifically from the relief on the Arch of Titus in Rome, where it appears among the spoils carried from the destroyed Second Temple in 70 AD.
That Roman monument remains the most accurate ancient depiction of the Temple menorah in existence.
