Brazil's National Treasury issued this denomination across multiple successive printings through the early 1920s, a symptom of chronic fiscal pressure that kept the Casa da Moeda running near capacity. By the 15th printing, the plates were well past their prime — impressions from late runs in this series are noticeably less sharp than early-state examples, and ink consistency varies within the same print batch.
The milréis itself was already a currency under strain by 1923, with exchange rates against sterling in near-continuous decline since the war years. This note predates the broader monetary reforms that would eventually replace the milréis with the cruzeiro in 1942.
