Rio Grande do Sul's 1932 state bonus issue is inseparable from the Constitutionalist Revolution of that year — but the gaúchos were on the opposite side from São Paulo. Getúlio Vargas, himself a gaúcho, had seized federal power in 1930 with significant support from Rio Grande do Sul's political machine, and when the Paulistas revolted against his provisional government in July 1932, the southern state remained loyal to Rio de Janeiro. These bonuses were issued by the state treasury to meet emergency financial obligations during that period of national instability.
Lithografia da Livraria do Globo was Porto Alegre's principal commercial press — capable, but not a specialist security printer. Series D suggests a substantial sequential issuance, not a one-off emergency run.
