Rio Grande do Sul had a long history of fiscal independence that periodically put it at odds with the federal government in Rio de Janeiro, and the 1930 emission of these state bônus came at a particularly charged moment — Getúlio Vargas, then governor of the state, launched his successful revolution against the federal government in October of that same year. Whether these notes circulated widely before the political upheaval disrupted normal commerce in the state is an open question.

Lithografia da Livraria do Globo was a Porto Alegre commercial printer, not a specialist security press, and the production quality reflects that — the lithographic work is competent regional output rather than intaglio-engraved currency. Gaúcho state bônus of this period are genuinely scarce, partly because emissions were modest and partly because few collectors outside Brazil have systematically pursued them.
