Obverse description Bare-headed bust of Ernst I, Duke of Saxe-Altenburg, facing right, with a full beard and short hair rendered in fine detail. The effigy is portrayed in a naturalistic style typical of late 19th-century German state coinage. The circular legend arcs around the periphery within a beaded border, and the mint mark 'A' (Berlin Mint) appears in the lower field beneath the portrait.
