| 裏面の説明 | The reverse is printed in dark blue and terracotta on a blue-grey wave-pattern guilloche underprint. A large central medallion contains the heraldic arms of Villingen — a quartered shield with an eagle, surmounted by a crested helm and flanked by elaborate acanthus mantling — set within concentric ring ornaments. Two flanking circular denomination lozenges, each bearing the numeral "20", are positioned left and right of the central arms. The upper portion carries the Fraktur heading "Kriegsnotgeld der Stadt Villingen" with the validity date "Gültig bis 1. Feb. 1919". To the lower left an assurance text states that the note is redeemable at all municipal cash offices; to the lower right the place and date "Villingen 15. Nov. 1918" appear alongside the manuscript signature of the Bürgermeister on behalf of the Gemeinderat, with the serial number printed at foot centre. |

Villingen's 20 Mark notgeld from November 1918 belongs to the wave of emergency municipal issues that proliferated as the German war economy collapsed and Reichsbank notes vanished into hoarding. Small cities like Villingen in the Black Forest had no meaningful recourse — local authorities simply contracted whatever regional printer was available. Hermann Pfaff's Lahr workshop, roughly 60 kilometers southwest, was a logical choice and handled several Baden-area commissions during this period.
The .02a suffix in the DeNG reference indicates a recognized variety within the type, likely a signature or overprint distinction rather than a reprint.
