The legend 'THALE A/HARZ' arcs across the upper field and 'MARK' curves along the lower field, all in bold Latin lettering. Thale's 1921 notgeld issue belongs to the enamelled iron series produced during the acute coin shortage that followed Germany's post-WWI economic dislocation — a period when hundreds of municipalities took currency production into their own hands. Enamelled iron pieces were produced in smaller quantities than their zinc or aluminum counterparts and saw limited actual circulation, making surviving examples with intact enamel the norm rather than the exception.
Thale, a small industrial town in the Harz foothills, issued several denominations in this series. The Funck catalog remains the primary reference for these municipal iron issues.
