Pattern coins from Hamburg's municipal mint are scarce precisely because the city lost its independent coinage rights under the imperial monetary unification of 1873 — by 1907, Hamburg was no longer striking circulating gold 20 Mark pieces on its own authority, making the purpose of this copper trial piece somewhat ambiguous.
