Louis IV died in March 1892 after slipping on wet pavement — an inglorious end for a Grand Duke who had commanded Hessian forces at Königgrätz and Gravelotte. This posthumous issue was struck that same year, making it effectively a memorial coin produced under his son Ernst Ludwig. The mintage was extremely limited, and the piece never meaningfully circulated.
Hesse-Darmstadt's gold coinage was always a marginal player within the German Imperial monetary system, with Frankfurt handling most of the actual commercial weight.
