Obverse description Bare-headed right-facing effigy of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, rendered with finely detailed wavy hair and a short beard, in the neoclassical portrait style characteristic of the German Imperial coinage era. The legend LUDWIG II KOENIG V.BAYERN curves along the upper periphery, while the mint mark D appears at the base of the truncation near the bottom of the field. The portrait is surrounded by a continuous beaded border.

Reverse description Centrally positioned crowned imperial German double-headed eagle displayed with spread wings, bearing on its breast a detailed heraldic shield; the eagle is depicted in the small-eagle type standard to the first coinage of the German Empire. The legend DEUTSCHES REICH arcs along the upper periphery with the date 1876 at the right, while the denomination * 20 MARK * is inscribed along the lower periphery, flanked by six-pointed stars. The design is enclosed within a beaded border.
