Obverse description The state emblem of the German Democratic Republic — a hammer and compass within a wreath of rye — is rendered in fine relief at the centre of the field. The circular inscription DEUTSCHE DEMOKRATISCHE REPUBLIK runs along the upper periphery in Latin letters. Below the emblem, the denomination numeral 20 is prominently displayed in the lower field, flanked by the date 1986 to the left and the currency designation MARK to the right. The mint mark A, identifying the Münze Berlin, appears at the bottom centre beneath the numeral.
