Issued in 1966 to mark the 250th anniversary of Leibniz's death, this was part of the GDR's sustained effort to claim the German intellectual tradition as socialist heritage. Leibniz was a particularly useful figure for East Berlin — his work on binary mathematics could be retrofitted, however awkwardly, into a narrative of scientific materialism. The coin was struck at the Berlin Mint, which had resumed commemorative production in the early 1960s after the disruptions of partition.
Mintages for GDR silver commemoratives of this period were modest, produced largely for export through Interpresent and similar hard-currency dealers rather than domestic circulation.
