Gera issued this note in 1918 under its full municipal title — Haupt- und Residenzstadt Gera — a designation reflecting its status as the residential capital of the Reuss principalities, one of the smallest sovereign states in the German Empire. The Reuss elder line had only just surrendered its throne in November 1918, and municipal emergency money of this type was filling the void left by a collapsing imperial currency supply long before the armistice made the political situation official.
Thuringian Notgeld from this transitional period tends to be underappreciated. Gera's issues are no exception.
