Soest issued this note during the hyperinflationary spiral of 1922, when German municipal and regional authorities were routinely stepping in to fill the void left by an increasingly worthless Reichsmark. The Magistrat — the city's governing council — was legally empowered to authorize emergency currency, and W. Crüwell of Dortmund was one of several regional printers kept busy supplying these Notgeld issues to Westphalian municipalities throughout this period.
Soest had a long history as a Hanseatic trading town, but by 1922 its civic administration was essentially printing local scrip to keep commerce moving. The DeNG 4#4330.2 designation places this within a well-documented series, suggesting more than one type was issued under the same authority that year.
