The upper register carries the bold denomination "20 Mark" in white lettering on a black ground. Opmerkingen

Amtskörperschaft Maulbronn was a small district-level administrative body in Württemberg, and its decision to issue emergency currency in 1918 reflects the near-total breakdown of coin and small-denomination note supply in Germany's final war year. Bezirksrat notgeld at this value — 20 Mark rather than the more typical Pfennig and low-Mark denominations — is uncommon; most municipal issuers stayed well below this threshold.

Vereinigte Kunstanstalten in Kaufbeuren handled a significant volume of Bavarian and southwestern German notgeld printing during this period, and their work is generally distinguishable by clean lithographic registration.
