Zittau's municipal emergency currency was among the more locally self-contained issues of the 1918 Notgeld wave — printed and issued within the same city, with Gebrüder Güttler handling production just streets away from the town hall that authorized it. The arrangement was common for smaller Saxon municipalities that couldn't access central printing resources during the final months of the war, when the Reichsbank's distribution network was under serious strain.
At 20 Mark, this sits at the higher end of municipal Notgeld denominations for the period — most city issues clustered around 50 Pfennig to 5 Mark, and larger values were typically redeemed faster, making survivors proportionally scarcer.
