Robert Kalina designed the entire 2005 Azerbaijani manat series shortly after completing the Europa series banknotes for the European Central Bank — the family resemblance in layout and security architecture is not coincidental. The Austrian State Printing Works in Vienna has produced currency for dozens of post-Soviet states since the early 1990s, and Azerbaijan's 2005 redenomination issue was part of a broader effort to replace the heavily inflated old manat, which had been trading at 4,500-to-one against its replacement.
The redenomination took effect 1 January 2006, making this series simultaneously new and immediately historical upon release.
