Additional information

Malta's 1974 gold issues were struck in the immediate wake of the country's declaration as a republic on December 13, 1974 — severing the last constitutional ties to the British Crown after a decade of independence. The Gozo boat, a traditional wooden vessel known locally as the dgħajsa tal-pass, had ferried passengers across the narrow channel between Malta and Gozo for centuries and remained in active working use at the time of minting.

KM#27 was produced in limited numbers as part of a multi-denomination commemorative gold set marking the new republic, with striking contracted to the British Royal Mint.
