| Beschrijving voorzijde | The Maltese national emblem is depicted at center within a raised circular border, showing a traditional Maltese fishing boat (dgħajsa) navigating stylized waves beneath a radiant sun, with a small bird perched to the right. The circular legend REPUBBLIKA TA MALTA runs around the periphery, separated by dot stops. A small asterisk appears at the base of the design, serving as a decorative stop between the first and last words of the legend. |

Malta's 1975 gold issues were part of a deliberate conservation series commissioned by the Central Bank to generate foreign exchange through collector sales rather than circulation. The freshwater crab (Potamon fluviatile) chosen for this denomination was already under pressure from habitat loss in Malta's rapidly shrinking freshwater systems — a population that has declined further in the decades since.
KM#37 was struck at the Royal Mint under contract, a standard arrangement for Malta during this period when the island lacked domestic minting capacity.
