Victor Emmanuel I abdicated in March 1821 — the same year this coin was struck — under pressure from the Piedmontese revolutionary movement demanding a constitutional government. He handed power to his brother Charles Felix rather than concede a constitution, making this a terminal-year issue for his reign. Very few were struck before the political crisis shut down normal operations at the Turin mint.
