Yusuf İsmail was an Ottoman-born wrestler who dominated European and American strongman circuits in the late nineteenth century, widely billed as "The Terrible Turk." His death is among the more striking footnotes in maritime history: he drowned in November 1898 when the SS Bourgogne sank in the North Atlantic, reportedly refusing to abandon a bag of gold sovereigns he had earned during his American tour.
The Darphane has issued collector silvers honoring Turkish historical and cultural figures with some regularity since the 2000s, though mintage figures for individual issues in this series are rarely publicized.
